Eileen Agar

Eileen Agar (1899–1991) was a trailblazing British-Argentine artist who became one of the leading figures of the Surrealist movement in Britain. Born in Buenos Aires to a wealthy family, she spent her life "in revolt against convention," blending Surrealism with elements of Cubism and abstraction. She is best known for her innovative use of found objects, collage, and her "magpie eye" for detail, which she used to transform the everyday into something mysterious.

Eileen Agar by Laura Smith is number 6 in the Modern Women Artists series of mini-monographs about brilliant women artists. Find out more and start collecting the series here
